I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve loaded up my suitcase this summer, from traveling to three cities for the World Cup to Jersey beach trips and a Vermont wedding weekend.

Might as well keep my bags packed and by the door, right?

Wrong.

Every destination is a chance to be creative and have different fashion moments, and you won’t see me compromise that in the name of convenience.

So come along with me, step-by-step, through my packing process to see everything from my mood board to my outfit math, cuts, and more.

🏖️ Step 1: Destination deep dive

Before getting into the specific details of the trip or deciding outfits, I always get a feel for the destination. For favorite spots, I think back to the aesthetic, ambiance, views, and activities. And for new places, I create a Pinterest board to capture the vibe and understand the assignment.

This trip’s destination:

Folly Beach, South Carolina

🧳 Step 2: Get out my suitcase, packing cubes, and airplane basics

You can’t pack without your suitcase, so I start there. I also grab my airplane necessities like personal item, packing cubes, headphones, sleep mask, reusable water bottle, and neck pillow.

⛰️ Step 3: The dumping ground

I don’t waste time neatly packing just yet. Instead, I use a pile method. I go through each room and grab the items I know I’ll be packing, from bathroom bags, to hats, sunglasses, my book, vitamins, snacks, etc., and put them on the floor of my packing room. This allows me to keep track of what I have and what I’m missing.

📝 Step 4: Think through the itinerary

We don’t willy nilly pack items over here. We curate outfits for occasions.

I walk through each day on the itinerary and type in a doc the days and activities that need outfits. If someone else planned the trip, I see what details they can give me. And when I’m still not sure every day’s plan, I think through potential activities, no matter how general, such as a beach day, walk through downtown, or a nice dinner.

👚 Step 5: Take out all possible outfit options

For me, there’s no sense in packing outfit by outfit. Rather, I hang up all my choices so my brain is surrounded by an abundance of options for creativity. This helps with the inevitable pitfall of feeling like I have nothing to wear when an envisioned outfit doesn’t come to fruition.

👗 Step 6: The try on

The worst mistake I could make is not trying on every outfit. Occasionally, something no longer fits well or it doesn’t match the way I thought it would in my head or look the same as on Pinterest.

Could you imagine finding any of that out on vacation? Absolutely not. I prefer to swap style chaos for confidence.

Which leads me to the next step …

👛 Step 7: Build out the outfit selections

An outfit is simply not complete or at its full potential without all the possible accessories. I’m not the girl who focuses on saving space by just bringing one purse and two pairs of shoes to wear with every look.

I try on every outfit and pair it with jewelry, shoes, a purse, and makeup. This ensures I don’t forget the correct earrings or lipstick or detail that pulls the whole vision together.

Best of all, it keeps me from mourning not having my full closet at my disposal while away from home.

Here’s what I packed this time:

The Bathing Suits

The Airplane Outfit

The Taco Night Outfit

The Boat Day Outfit

The Remote Work Outfit

The Out-to-Dinner Outfit

The Sunset Outfit

The Game Night Outfit

The Beach Photos Outfit

The Downtown Outfit

The Church Outfit

The Back Deck Outfit

✂️ Step 8: Assign outfits to days and make cuts

After building my options, I pick which one I’ll wear what day. If an outfit isn’t matched with a day, it’s cut (with the exception of an extra outfit or two that are usually safe to have).

For this reason, this gorgeous Francesca’s dress was cut this time:

Or it’s cut for a space-saving decision. Since I’m not willing compromise how an outfit is styled, if its accessories aren’t being reworn with other outfits or are too bulky, sometimes they have to stay at home for another occasion.

This option was cut because it required shoes for only this outfit, a boxy purse that was also only for this outfit, and two dresses to layer:

🧖🏻‍♀️ Step 9: Hang the outfits and steam them

We don’t need packing wrinkles to ruin an outfit. When I can’t bring a steamer, I minimize the damage by hanging my clothes until the day before I depart. Then, I steam them and let them fully cool before packing them up. The less time they’re squished into a packing cube, the better.

💄 Step 10: Pack other necessities

This is where I get my bathroom and makeup bags together and make sure I have undergarments (and try not to forget that strapless bra like always).

🔌 Step 12: Charge everything

The thought of my headphones dying mid flight, my UV water bottle not turning on after I filled it at the airport fountain, or my Fitbit dying on Day One, is enough nightmare fuel to motivate me to do the very annoying task of charging everything.

This also ensures I bring all the right cables.

🎒 Step 13: Finally pack

I bet you were wondering when I was actually going to pack everything up in my suitcase and backpack. The answer is: the day before. Now that I have a head count of everything and my clothes have been steamed, I can make sure everything fits and zips — and I will always make it zip.

✈️ Step 14: Lay out airplane clothes

I save myself time the next day with this two-second routine. It’s especially great for those early morning flights.

⏰ Step 15: Leave reminders

I have learned the hard way that my brain typically doesn’t have the capacity to remember all the details I swear I won’t forget. To mitigate this, I write sticky notes or text myself reminders of everything I need to pack in the morning.

🧳 🏖️ ☀️👗 And with that final step, my packing process is complete. Time for some sun, sand, and style!

It’s August 1, which means everyone is going through a collective “It’s already August, where has the summer gone?” spiral.

But I’m here to figuratively hold your hand and say, summer isn’t over.

If that didn’t help, I might suggest a quick dunk in the Atlantic Ocean. The icy salt water is sure to take your breath away for a second and clear your head. And when you’re done, you can return to your sunny day on the beach — because summer isn’t over.

Now the question is: How do you keep that inevitable doom spiral at bay a little longer?

Here are 15 tips to slowing down and savoring summer:

1. Make an August Bucket List

Okay, so you’re overwhelmed with all the things you haven’t gotten to this summer. Turn that chaos into a list and you’ll be surprised with how much you can achieve in a month.

Or maybe, you have no idea what else you want to do, but you’re not satisfied with your summer yet. Use this as a chance to get creative and think of all the possibilities that would slow down the season and make it memorable.

2. Plan a Day Trip

Just because you don’t have an August vacation to Italy or the Cape planned, doesn’t mean you can’t get in the vacay mindset. Instead of telling yourself, “There’s nowhere fun near me,” go online, and look up day trip possibilities.

Maybe there’s an undiscovered hike nearby or a coffee shop and cute stores in a neighboring downtown. Or maybe, the Cape is closer than you think, and you can actually drive there for the day. This end-of-summer hack is sure to make your weekend feel 10 times longer.

3. Search For Nearby Summer Events

Growing up, summer in the suburbs meant there was always a seasonal town event, from the annual Greek festival to block parties. No matter where you live, there’s bound to be an option nearby that will slow down time and take you back to those childhood summer memories.

4. Find Live Music Near You

One of my favorite things to do in summer is sit outside with a beverage of choice and listen to live music. It creates the optimal summer atmosphere.

Don’t forget, live music doesn’t always have to be expensive. Patios, wineries, and parks tend to organize free live music options too.

5. Go On More Morning and Night Walks

Your spiral is right about one thing: Soon it will be getting dark earlier. (It actually already is, unfortunately.) Nonetheless, you need a mental reframing. You still have plenty of long days ahead, so think of all you can accomplish in that time.

One of the best ways to stretch your sunlight hours is by spending as much as them as possible outside, particularly in the morning or night where you’ll feel the biggest lost of daylight in the fall.

My recommendation: Go on more morning and evening walks to feel a little sunlight gratitude.

6. Say Yes to Everything

You can rest when it’s cold out. Yes, I really mean it. This time of the year can often feel exhausting as you jump from vacation to dinner plans to pool days, all while juggling work. If you live somewhere that gets cold like Boston, remind yourself that the activity texts get thinner as the days get colder.

7. Find a Farmers Market

Enjoy the fresh tastes of summer while they’re here. Go to a local farmer’s market, or even go on a short drive if there isn’t one in your town. It’s a bonus if the market sells more than just produce. Sampling local honey, browsing hand-made jewelry, and biting into fresh peaches with an iced coffee in hand is bound to keep you present in summer.

8. Cook Summer Recipes

The season isn’t just about the activities we do and places we go. It’s also about the fresh and flavorful food that we eat on warm days. It’s time to make that pasta salad or cedar planked salmon you haven’t gotten around to. Better yet, look up a new recipe to make the cooking experience even more exciting.

9. Don’t Save Plans for Weekends

Instead, make the most of your week days. We’re all incredibly busy, but I’ve found that we always have the ability to make time for the things that are important to us.

Ask a friend or coworker to grab a drink after work, grab dinner on the outside patio you’ve had your eye on, visit a museum or see a movie (both are likely to be cheaper on week days), grab ice cream, or have a picnic. All of a sudden, your week days won’t be so monotonous.

10. Host a Summer Event

I’ve been traveling all summer for the World Cup, and I’ve realized recently that I have a craving to host an event. While hosting is a lot of work, the excitement of planning is worth it, and the evening always allows me to slow down and appreciate my home, friends, and the season we’re celebrating.

So whether it’s a dinner party, game night, or fire pit hang, get people together for food, drinks, and energy that scream summer. Don’t have time to host a full evening until fall like me? Ask your friend group to set aside a day in September, and until then, invite a friend to come over for a casual brunch.

Speaking of, my girl friend will be here soon for a catch up over pancakes!

11. Shop Your Closet

Go through your closet and pick out your must-wear summer pieces that you haven’t had a chance to wear yet or that you’re dying to rewear this season. As you peruse, ask yourself what pieces you would be sad you didn’t get to wear come time for your fall clean out or seasonal closet switch. The good news is, you still have a full month to wear them.

12. Repeat Your Favorite Summer Day or Night

You may be feeling a little blue because you’ve already experienced all your fun summer plans. If there’s a day or night that you particularly keep looking back on, why not recreate it?

Now, I know you can’t just fly back to Santorini, but that doesn’t mean you can’t bring Santorini to you. What was it about the night that was so special? The food? The ambiance? The conversation? Get together with your travel buddy, and cook the dish yourselves. You can light candles and replicate the decor, all while reminiscing.

If your favorite day was at the town pool or a date night in downtown, those should be even easier to replicate.

13. Slow Down

Does the entire to-do list need to be done today? Do you need to do endless back-to-school prep right this second? Does the house need to be deep cleaned immediately? Sometimes the answer is no, and the better option is sitting in the sun, going for a walk, diving into your beach read, or cooking that slow summer recipe.

14. Set a Reading Goal

Believe it or not, you actually do have time to start that beach read you’ve been eyeing on your book shelf — or at least finish the book you haven’t been able to finish this summer. Set a goal that feels realistic to you and your busy life but that would also feel like an exciting endeavor or rewarding accomplishment.

15. Turn Off The TV

I can’t recall a single time I looked back on a summer and thought of how great it was to sit at home and watch a TV show. Too often, we return to the routine of sitting down on the couch after a long day or week. But that’s not what summer’s about.

Instead, play a game, crack open that beach read, sit outside, or start a craft. Whatever you do, it’s sure to make it more memorable and keep the days from blending together.

Hello, reader! It’s been a while.

During June and July, I traveled for the World Cup and soaked up every minute of the tournament. With 104 matches played, traveling from city to city, and work, that didn’t leave a lot of time for writing. So now it’s time to start recapping.

There’s no better place to start than with my DIYs. I spent months — that’s not an exaggeration — conceptualizing and then realizing the projects. It included thrift hunts, endless returns to find the perfect items, and tedious hours with a needle and thread.

But I couldn’t be happier with how everything came out. (It was definitely worth the lack of sleep and sewing blisters.)

Now …

Drumroll please 🥁

It’s time to break down my six DIY masterpieces and the story behind each.

1. Cowgirl Hat With Country Flag Pins

The Netherlands group stage games brought us to Dallas, Houston, and Kansas City. I already wear a straw cowgirl hat on the beach, so I couldn’t pass up the chance to rock one in the south.

My goal was to seamlessly incorporate the World Cup into the hat without making it feel too costume-y. I found this Haute Hippie Style black hat at T.J. Maxx, and when I saw the holes in the disc belt, my brain immediately jumped to the round country flag pins I had seen on Amazon.

Spain, my main team, took the center spot with the host countries on one side and the Netherlands and their group-stage opponents on the other. Then, I filled in the rest of the holes with various countries I was rooting for.

While I was going for subtle, the flags were admittedly small. To solve this, I added the large FIFA 26 pin, which was bold enough to get people to notice the detailing on the hat while also balancing the look.

Of course, this seemingly simple addition came with its own crafting complications. Since the pin only had a backing at the top, it swayed. I grabbed an extra earring post and used B7000 glue to secure it. And to avoid sticking my head, I also glued on a butterfly backing.

In the end, this was one of my two most complimented DIYs.

2. Cowgirl Boots With Country Patches

The boots, in fact, took the cake as my most-complimented DIY. They were also the most complicated and time consuming.

The saga started with finding the right pair that didn’t break the bank. Black boots made the most sense for a neutral base. It took returning numerous pointed-toe options before I stumbled upon the perfect square-toe pair with plenty of toe room, a mid-calf shaft to avoid sweltering in the heat, and a cushiony sole.

But seriously, we need to talk about the sole of these boots. I wore them in five cities for 20k+ steps a day and never had a blister or discomfort.

My plan was to put one patch on the front of each boot. But my DIY dreams almost came crashing down a week out from travel when the Etsy patches I ordered got lost in the mail. Instead, I frantically ordered six soccer country patches off Amazon (three host countries and three teams I was rooting for) to place on the outside of each shaft.

With only a few nights after work to complete this daunting task, I set to work. I used a specialty leather sewing kit that included a solid wood awl to poke holes through the thick material, a sturdy needle, and waxed thread.

When I completed one side, I proudly jumped up to try on the boot — only to find I had accidentally sewn the patches on the inside shaft …

An inch away from a second DIY breakdown, I FaceTimed my boyfriend to share the moment of disbelief before making a new game plan. Since removing the patches would leave large holes from the awl, my only option was to order duplicate patches and commit to sewing them on the inside and outside of each boot.

After more hours than I can count, a myriad of needle pricks, and sewing blisters on my hands, the boots were done. And boy, were they beautiful.

These boots didn’t just take the cake as my most complimented project — but as my all-time favorite DIY.

3. Customized Clear Purse

Back in March, I completed a trial run for my World Cup clear stadium bag for the Boston Legacy’s inaugural NWSL game. A few detail swaps later, the same purse was ready for the Netherlands group-stage games.

The foundation of the purse’s brilliance was the turf base. As expected, not everyone noticed that level of detail, but those who did were just as excited as I was. The soccer ball stress ball completed the field aesthetic. I used clear adhesive dots to keep it from rolling around the bag.

To avoid too much chaos on display, I used a free Clinique mini makeup bag to reign in some of the smaller items I was carrying.

As for the exterior, I slid a Netherlands patch into a magnetic badge holder that previously held my Sky Blue FC ticket for the Legacy game. A soccer ball strap provided functionality while honing in the theme, and the mini jersey and Trionda keychains connected the design specifically to the 2026 tournament.

I fastened these with a brass keychain, while a Netherlands ribbon kept everything from dangling too much.

4. Denim Shorts with Patches

If you have muscular soccer thighs, then you know how hard it is to find jeans and jean shorts that are breathable, cover your backside, and prevent chub rub. (And if you don’t know what chub rub is, then you are one lucky soul.) So committing to finding a pair of jean shorts for the World Cup was rather bold of me.

After many returns, I found a pair of Levi’s that satisfied my checklist. So, inevitably, I did exactly what my mom cautioned me against and ironed patches onto them.

I started with one leg representing the host countries and the other representing my main teams, Spain and the Netherlands, before dispersing soccer-themed patches throughout.

Most notably, I had soccer ball patches poking out of the front penny and back pocket. The key to the ironing was using wax paper as a barrier since a towel was too thick to melt the glue fully.

5. Vintage Sweatshirt with Patches

A few months ago, I thrifted this retro Adidas red sweatshirt that was perfectly worn in. While I was just about over projects with patches, I knew they were my best bet for quick, quality customization. And thank goodness I didn’t give up on the vision because the FIFA merch, especially the sweatshirts, was severely lacking.

In addition to the country patches, I threw in one from each host city we visited: Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, and Boston. I also placed a ball-in-net patch on the edge of the center pocket for a playful touch.

For the finishing detail, I wore my heart on my sleeve with a soccer ball heart patch to represent how my boyfriend and I met through soccer and were on this World Cup journey together. I ironed it on the left sleeve to be closest to my heart and had the point facing in to show love pouring into my heart in true Claddagh fashion.

6. Soccer Ball Jewelry Set

At the March Legacy game, as well as the team’s kit launch party, I received an abundance of compliments on my soccer ball beaded bracelet, followed by inquiries of where to buy it. My answer always left them more shocked than disappointed: It was my childhood bracelet from elementary school.

Naturally, it was losing its elasticity, so I took the risk of cutting it and restringing the beads with clear string.

My next idea was born from the bracelet: a scaled-up version to rest on the neckline of a jersey. Amazon supplied the silicone soccer ball beads, but I was worried about the necklace breaking from the weight if I used the same elastic string as the bracelet. Instead, I opted for an old necklace chain.

The design needed to be a choker for it to rest perfectly on the kit’s neckline. But as is always the case with chokers, if it’s too tight, you can never ignore it’s presence. When I added the beads to the chain, that was exactly the case. To add a little more neck room, I ordered a necklace extender.

The look simply wouldn’t have been complete without a matching pair of earrings, so back to Amazon I went. This created the perfect jewelry trifecta that served as a cohesive element in every game look.

The World Cup starts in a week, which means it’s Game Time for outfit planning. Earlier this week, I shared Part 1 of this World Cup shoe series with footwear recs inspired by soccer, from old-school cleats to red cards and the Golden Boot.

Part 2 is even more exciting. I took the 15 World Cup jerseys that I awarded “Best in Class” in April and paired each with the perfect sporty shoe. These all-star picks are sure to give you superior sideline style:

1. The France Away Shoe

Honor Lady Liberty’s once bronze exterior with these Nike shoes that bring out the tarnishing France logo.

2. The USA Stars and Stripes Shoe

The Adidas stripes with the blue stars make these the perfect stars and stripes shoes. The best part? They match with both kits.

3. The Spain Home Shoe

At first glance, these shoes screamed España to me. But beyond that, a big part of the visual appeal of this pairing is the reversal of red and yellow as the dominant color in the two products.

Bonus: The Spain Away Shoe

When I saw, these shoes, I knew I had to include a bonus for the away jersey. The old-school, yet detailed design of the shoe, as well as the colors, make this a perfect match.

4. South Korea Away Shoe

I got these shoes for Christmas and am obsessed. Their iridescent purple shimmer is mesmerizing, making it an obvious choice for the jersey I awarded most aesthetic.

5. Mexico Home Shoe

Sometimes it’s just a match made in heaven.

6. Germany Home Shoe

You might look at these shoes and think they work because of the matching colors. But look one step further at the geometric diamonds and triangles in the middle of the jersey and the laces, and you’ll see just how well they truly work together.

7. Germany Away Shoe

Another match made in heaven — now, we’re just getting lucky.

8. Colombia Home Shoe

Third time’s a charm?

9. Portugal Away Shoe

These shoes not only have the jersey’s mint coloring, but texture and a Puma silver wave element that connect to the ocean design

10. Côte d’Ivoire Away Shoe

The two pastel colors in the jersey are so good that the shoes had to follow suit.

11. Ghana Home Shoe

This pairing is probably my favorite, from the thick black detailing to the thin colorful lines. Someone call the designers at Puma and Adidas because how is this not an intentional pairing?

12. Canada Away Shoe

I have a pair of the Taekwondo shoes in black and white and love them. The patent leather and red, however, draws out the edginess of Canada’s graffiti-style jersey.

13. Morocco Home Shoe

Morocco’s jersey is one of my favorites because of its traditional mosaic collar and unique neckline. This, however, made it harder to find a shoe that honored those elements.

The texture of this Puma sneaker connects to the jersey’s geometric hem, and the open, yet artfully designed lace area of the shoe mirrors its unique neckline.

14. Netherlands Home Shoe

The Netherlands went with a never-before-used shade of orange for their jerseys. So, the shoes needed to be two things: orange and bright.

15. Croatia Home Shoe

Red, white, and classic. What more do you need for Croatia?
